This photo is another high contrast
machine made print that brings out many details not seen in the faded original.
This image could be scanned, restored, repaired and photographically printed
by computer or it could be custom printed by a photo lab. Either would
greatly improve the final result, b ut the carefully stored custom print
on archival paper would last the longest.

Photographic Restoration of Slides
The slides above were duplicated
using a Beseler slide duplicator with a color head to adjust color balance
and exposure. For a large number of slides of family or vacations this
method is the most economical. For cases where color balance is critical
there are "test strip" sequences of up to 3 6 images per slide to determine
the most acceptable color. This of course is much more expensive but still
less expensive than a computer restoration.

Digital Restoration of Old Photographs and Slides
Above are examples of several
typ es of restorations, a portrait c.1920's that was in four pieces. A color
copy was made of the reassembled print, the negative was scanned into PhotoShop
and restored. The file was transmitted to a laboratory over the internet
and a photograph was made. Th e second example was an old dark Polaroid
print that was scanned into PhotoShop and the exposure and color balance
were adjusted to give the final result. The third example is a badly discolored
slide (E-3 Process dating from the 1950's) which was scanned and restored
in PhotoShop. Comparable results could have been obtained by duplicating
the slide photographically with color compensating filters to restore the
color balance.
